What happens at the assessment clinic
A radiologist will look at your mammograms, and evaluate the suspicious area by Ultrasound & may perform additional views. You may be either:
1) Normal
The tests may have found that there was no problem with the breast tissue. This means that the initial mammogram showed evidence of a potential abnormal area in the breast, but further tests did not find a problem. In this situation the first mammogram is said to have had a false- positive result. You will not need to have any further tests or treatment and can just go back to the screening unit for your annual mammogram.
2) Asked to follow up after 6 months
3) have an ultrasound guided biopsy
4) Referred for surgery
Your surgeon may sometimes ask for a wire localization if he cannot easily feel the abnormality. Your radiologist will then mark the abnormality with a wire that is inserted under your skin into the area of breast that is causing concern. Right afterward, the surgeon can meet you in the operating room and can use the wire to find the abnormal spot in your breast so that he or she can remove it.
